A Big Thank You from Herefordshire Headway and Broome Farm

Thank you to the two dozen or so Ramblers and friends who attended the BBQ / Forest of Dean Morris dancers event at Broome Farm, Peterstow on 30th June.

Everyone seemed to have a great evening and a few even joined in the last dance!

You will be pleased to know £410 was raised for Herefordshire Headway.  The farm chose to support this charity for 12 months during 2009 / 2010.  Herefordshire Headway promotes understanding of all aspects of brain injury and provides support and services to people with acquired brain injury and their carers.

Thanks again to all who attended and gave generously to the “pot” and bought raffle tickets.  Most of the prizes were won by Ramblers!

Ramblers successes

The Ramblers is a campaigning organisation and here you will find details of just some of our recent footpath successes in getting paths open.

Below we give an account of just one piece of practical work we have done

Before                                                                After

On Monday 15th March 2010 a group of about 25 volunteers from several organisations gathered in Wellington Heath near Ledbury to participate in a footpath clearance on a Public Right of Way that runs east from the phone box in Wellington Heath by the Farmers Arms to meet the path along the foot of Frith Wood.

The group was made up of 10 Herefordshire Ramblers members, 10 Earth Heritage Trust members (Geopark Way) and six Wellington Heath residents.

We were met on sight by Tim Thompson of Local Government – Amey, who had liaised with local landowners and ourselves so that this activity could go ahead.

An agreement had been secured to carry out whatever work was necessary, to cut back the hedge and burn on site as needed. There was a time constraint inasmuch as all the hedge work must be completed by the end of March to ensure that we didn’t interfere with the bird nesting season.

The “before” photo shows the wilderness of undergrowth, mainly brambles and overhanging branches we were faced with but after a hard days work by all and many bonfires the “after” photo shows what we all achieved. A well worthwhile exercise by all concerned who gave their time on the day. Thank you all.

Work for the future on this path requires the replacement of the stile by the footbridge with a pedestrian gate; install another pedestrian gate at the top of the enclosed section, and a kissing gate into the wood. Once the hedge work has been completed we could move on to the gate work and further work along the “Herefordshire Trail”.

Footpath closures

A number of footpaths are temporarily closed, in particular footbridges. Details are Here.  Please keep reminding Herefordshire Council that it is important to get these routes re-opened!
